You are speeding along the freeway of life. You are surrounded by hundreds of other drivers, traveling in the same direction. It’s the only road you’ve ever known. You take comfort in the fact that you’re a good, law-abiding person. And you figure that eventually, you’ll get to where you want to go. You see exits along the way. You see exit signs that read, EDUCATION, FAMILY, PLEASURE, WEALTH, and CAREER. You’ve taken some of those exits. Some have been good choices; some have been bad choices. Sometimes you pass an exit sign that simply reads TRUTH NEXT EXIT. You think, “Someday, when I have the time, I’ll take that exit, and find out if truth really exists. Today is that day.
You can bring your intellect with you.  You can use our intelligence and rationality to weigh evidence.

If God is powerful enough to create the universe, then He is powerful enough to personally communicate with mankind, and to protect that communication from change or corruption.

If God has spoken, then we need to listen.

Here's the plan:

1. We'll show that the Resurrection is true.  Jesus of Nazareth really did rise from the dead.

2. We'll show that Jesus endorsed the scriptures.

3. We'll show that today's Bible is trustworthy.  Our Bible is virtually unchanged since the first century A.D.

This will not be an exhaustive study.  Entire books have been devoted to these proofs.  If you need more proof, you may want to do your own study to prove these statements are true.

Information on the Bible

1. The Resurrection is True
Jesus Christ was declared to be the Son of God by the resurrection from the dead.  (Acts 17:31 and Romans 1:4)

If you're satisfied, as I am, that the Bible is God's truth to us, then start here.

What I’m about to tell you will upset you, but it’s the truth. You expected the truth. If you stay on that freeway you will pass through DISILLUSIONMENT, come to EMPTINESS, and eventually arrive at DESTRUCTION.

Most of us respect God’s word, the Bible, as authoritative. But many of us are not familiar with God’s word. Left to ourselves, we assume that God will decide who gets into heaven based upon our behavior during our lifetime. We think that if our good deeds outweigh our bad deeds, we’ll get into heaven. But this is a fatal error, based upon human reasoning. God says that our reasoning leads us down the wrong path. Right now, that freeway might seem right to you, but listen to what God says.

There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.  (Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25)

But God says that we can find truth.  Listen …

You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.  (Jeremiah 29:13)

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.  (Matthew 7:7-8)

We accept man's testimony, but God's testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son.  (1 John 5:9)

Let’s fast-forward in time – to the last day. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, taught that there will be a final judgment. It will take place on the last day of history. Some people will be saved and some people will not be saved.

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his throne in heavenly glory. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on his right, "Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. / Then he will say to those on his left, `Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels." / Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.  (Matthew 25:31-34, 41, 46)

If you’re like me, you do not want to be among those on the left, who are sent to hell. You wonder what those on the right did to deserve eternal life in heaven. So it’s clear that we’ll have to do some reading to determine what God requires of us. During Christ’s ministry on earth, a man approached Jesus.

Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?"

"Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments."
     "Which ones?" the man inquired.
Jesus replied, " `Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother,' and `love your neighbor as yourself.'"
"All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?"
Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.  Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, "Who then can be saved?"

Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
(Matthew 19:16-26)

Why did Jesus say that, with man, salvation is impossible? Let’s look at our natural spiritual condition. From birth, we are sinful.

Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.  (Psalm 51:5)

As it is written: ‘There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.’  (Romans 3:5-8)

Here is our problem: we are sinful … and God is Holy.

Surely the arm of the LORD is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear.  But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.  (Isaiah 59:1-2)

Consider the Ten Commandments, God’s standard of perfection (Exodus 20:3-17 / Deuteronomy 5:6-21):

1. You shall have no other gods before Me.
Have you loved God above all else?  Is He the first in your life?  He should be  He's given you your life and everything that is dear to you.  Do you love Him with all of your heart, soul, mind and strength?
2. You shall not make for yourself an idol.
Have you made a god in your mind that you're comfortable with -- where you say, "My god is a loving and merciful god who would never send anyone to hell"?  That god does not exist; he's figment of your imagination.  To create your own image of god is what the Bible calls idolatry.  Idolaters will not enter Heaven.
3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.
Have you ever used God’s name in cursing?  That's called blasphemy, and it's very serious in God's sight. God will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.
4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Have you ever failed to keep one day in seven as a day set aside to God?
5. Honor your father and your mother.
Have you ever shown disrespect to your parents?
6. You shall not murder.
Have you ever hated someone?  The Bible says whoever is angry with / hates his brother is a murderer (Matthew 5:22).
7. You shall not commit adultery.
Jesus said whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her in his heart (Matthew 5:27-28).
8. You shall not steal.
Have you ever stolen anything (regardless of value)?  Have you ever exaggerated when recording time worked for your employer?  Have you ever failed to report all your income on your tax return?
9. You shall not bear false witness.
Have you ever told a lie?  The Bible says that lying lips are an abomination to the Lord (Proverbs 12:22).
10. You shall not covet.
Have you ever strongly / jealously desired to have something that belonged to someone else?

If you have answered "yes" to even one of these questions, then you have broken the Ten Commandments. You are a law-breaker. And God says that you are guilty of breaking all of His Ten Commandments.  Your sins are an offense to God.  And the passing of time does not forgive your sins.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.  (Romans 3:23)

For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. For he who said, "Do not commit adultery," also said, "Do not murder." If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.  (James 2:10-11)

Do you know why this makes sense to us?  Because God has "written" His law on our hearts.  We call it our conscience.

Even those who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it.  They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right. (Romans 2:15, New Living Translation)

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.  (Romans 6:23)

If you do nothing further, God says that you will die in your sins, because His wrath still hangs over you.  You will have to pay the penalty for your sins.  You are in a very dangerous condition!

[Jesus said] I told you that you would die in your sins; if you do not believe that I am the One I claim to be, you will indeed die in your sins.  (John 8:24)

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him.  (John 3:36)

Jesus says in another place that we must be perfect.

If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.  (Matthew 5:46-48)

Now, you’re probably asking, ‘Is God serious? Does He expect me to be perfect?’ Yes, He does.

It’s clear that God does not grade on “the curve”. We must be declared ‘perfect’ in order to enter God’s heaven, and escape punishment in hell.

If you are concerned about your eternal soul, you may be asking, "Now what do I do?! I didn’t know these things about God’s commands!"

God says that you must repent - change your mind about the direction you are going.  Walk away from what your God-given conscience tells you is sin.  Turn around and go the other way.  With God's help, you can.

In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.  (Acts 17:30)

Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.  (Acts 3:19)

The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household."  (Acts 16:29-31)
